A quick introduction

When the red tomato season is over at the Stadsgroenteboer we usually do one round of picking all the left over green tomatoes. Those perfectly unripe fruits make for a great chutney and can also be fried and served as a snack or side dish. These green tomatoes should not be confused with ripe green tomatoes that we also grow or with tomatillo’s.

Green tomatoes store for quite a while outside of the fridge (they may even turn red!)

Suggestions for preparation

Although it isn't too healthy to eat lots of unripe green tomatoes, eating a little of it is perfectly fine (at least we've done so for the past few years!). They are traditionally used to make chutneys and we've shared two different recipes for that below. They also taste great pan fried and we've found a recipe for an Indian curry with green tomatoes. If you are not inspired by any of these recipes you can also place your green tomatoes on your windowsill and wait until they ripen, eventually this will happen and although the taste cannot be compared to on-the-vine-ripened tomatoes they will still be decent enough to use in sauces etc.
