Edible flowers

A quick introduction

We grow lots of flowers at the farm to attract beneficial insects, because flowers are beautiful and because many of them are edible! A few examples are: cornflowers, calendula, nasturtiums, malva, marigolds and fennel flowers. You might find them in our salad mix or packaged in a small see-through container made of biodegradable material.

Storage

In a closed container in the fridge.

Season

Spring to fall

Suggestions for preparation

Most edible flowers we grow have mild sweet flavours but not all: nasturtiums really stand our for their spiciness and the lemon marigolds for their distinct flavour that's somewhere between lemon and coca cola. For calendula, malva and large marigolds we recommend that you only eat the petals and remove the green bottom parts of the flowers as that part can be a little tough. Flowers are a very easy way to make a dish look more appealing and a perfect excuse to invite friends for a festive meal! Sprinkle a handful of flowers over your salad, decorate a white frosted cake with colourful petals or place a single flower on a dessert…voilá, a feast!
