Turmeric

Curcuma longa

A quick introduction

We are experimenting with growing turmeric in our greenhouse and so far it is going reasonably well! Fresh turmeric is a knobbly root that looks like ginger, but both its peel and flesh are brightly orange-coloured. The flavour of fresh turmeric is more earthy and sweet compared to its dried and powdered form. Fresh turmeric is quite prone to staining, so you might be left with orange hands (and kitchen tools) after handling it! We will leave the stems and leaves attached to our turmeric, so that they can be used to make a very fragrant herbal tea!

Storage

Stores for some time in the vegetable drawer of the fridge. Can also be frozen in small portions

Season

Summer to early fall

Suggestions for preparation

Turmeric can be used whole or peeled, depending on your own preference or on the recipe. Simply use the back of a spoon to rub away the thin peel, and then slice, chop, or grate it. Add fresh turmeric to hot water and lemon juice for a fragrant tea, to scrambled eggs or tofu for a fragrant and colorful twist, or grate it in fried rice, smoothies, soups, salsas, or dressings!
